Knowing your self worth

Southern California band The McCharmlys share the music video to their single, “Awful Thing”. The band opens up about being inspired by The Zombies, standing up for yourself, and a song that almost didn’t come to life.

You are sharing the music video for your single, "Awful Thing". What is the story behind the song  and what is it about?

To begin with, this particular song was almost gonna be a throw away. It was an idea I had sitting in one of my notebooks for years because I didn't know how to transition the song into a bridge..it wasn't until the day that we started to record and think about how we wanted our album to flow, and how many songs we wanted, that we decided we HAD to have it on the album. The day we recorded it, our 12 string guitar player, Eddie Gutierrez sat with me at Jazz Cats recording studio (in Long Beach) and without hesitation, came up with the missing piece to “Awful Thing” which made it bloom into the gem it is today. Simple and full of a lot of meaning.

“Awful Thing” is about knowing your self worth and discovering yourself in a deeper level. Your likes, dislikes. Understanding that you can never change people, but also realizing that it's the flaws that keep you coming back. Imperfection is perfection.

Out of the songs from the record, why did you choose to make a video to "Awful Thing"? :

We chose to make a video on this song because it’s quickly become a favorite amongst our community of friends. We just thought it was a very special song that needed to be highlighted. A song about standing up for yourself and realizing that you can’t change people. But you can appreciate them and learn from them.

What was the inspiration for the video? How did it come to life?

The idea is based off one of my favorite bands, “The Zombies” - “Tell Her No”

I  just LOVE this era of beat/ rock music and thought it would be cool if we solidified this chapter of our musical journey with that aesthetic . It’s fun and  simple.

What were some fun highlights during the making of the video? What were some struggles?

I think overall the biggest struggle for our band is getting anywhere on time. We might of got a little lost upon arriving be we made it happen!

Over all, we’re all really good friends and it’s really fun to get together and goof off a little here and there.
